Vitellaria Paradoxa, or VP, is a durational work dedicated to the quest of becoming comfortable with one’s body. Through the ritualistic act of applying shea butter, I offer myself as an example of the labor intensive love we as Black people pour into ourselves and our bodies. The care we take of our person in the comfort of our homes before entering the world, arming ourselves if you will, for what the day may bring. The nudity in the work is not to draw attention to the body, but to detract from it rather. This ritual cannot be performed clothed, so, in staying true to the task, the audience is granted access to witness this intimate moment of love and care.

Four 8×6 ft mirrors reflect the audience’s view back unto itself. Does my Blackness bother you? A question subconsciously posed by the work as they watch themselves watching me.
